I have known Suzie and Kelly Carpenter for nearly two decades, and today I have the pleasure of interviewing the mother-daughter duo! She is fully conversational although she still faced many challenges growing up, and is able to articulate and share those experiences with us today, and is able to give us a very important perspective. Kelly was diagnosed with autism when she was four years-old. However she was so high-functioning that she was placed in classrooms with other typical children and faced a lot of hardships for it; for example, her behavior was misunderstood and her teachers and peers did not understand how to interact with her. This led to Kelly feeling very isolated and eventually, being bullied. Once it became clear that Kelly needed a different environment, her parents made the decision to fight to place Kelly in an autism-friendly school.
The change in Kelly was drastic, and for the first time in her life, she was able to make lasting friendships and grasp the curriculum presented to her. Now 23 years old, Kelly has experience working a regular job; dating; and driving. She discusses the challenges she had to overcome in each of these areas, and how they helped form her into the lady that she is now. This is a continuation Part 2 of the worrisome data and statistics gathered in U. Part 1 covered the high rates of bullying, cyberbullying, assaults, weapon carriers, and threats or harm done by weapon carriers in our middle- and high schools annually. We learned that the rates were anywhere from epidemic proportions to even six or seven times higher than epidemic levels based on the reliable CDC data! About twice as many adolescent girls as boys were so unhappy with their lives that they were seriously thinking about committing suicide!
Could this have something to do with the fact that almost twice as many young women are bullied either verbally or by cyberbullying than males? A second question was whether they had made a plan within the last 12 months to kill themselves. This rate would actually be higher if the students who successfully committed suicide were still around to respond to this question because suicide is the second or third leading cause of death in middle- and high school students, depending on the exact age range studied.
Sadly their statistics are missing from this survey. It is shocking to think that so many of our middle- and high school students are so distraught that they are attempting suicide because they regard death as a more desirable condition than life! Obviously not all suicide attempts are made due to bullying.
